Breviloquance!

An advice to students! Please do improve vocabulary as it will not only help you in CAT and other Management Entrance Tests but will also be useful in your career. Besides, it is also a great fun to make friends with new words regularly.

However a word of caution! Please use complicated, newly learnt powerful words sparingly in speaking and writing. Instead use simple words or idioms in an interesting and creative way. There is no point in using three long, uncommon adjectives and/or adverbs in a sentence of five words.

Initially don't try any linguistic stunt like 'exasperating  farrago of distortions' used by Shashi Tharoor as it suits to  learned writers and celebrity like him but not to majority of others.

A student inspired by Shashi Tharoor first spoke and then wrote the following sentence in Start Case : Sanctity of a Sanctum-Sanctorum Of An Educational Shrine Has To Be Sanctimonious!

This kind of speaking or writing is an example of grandiloquance! A style or manner of speaking that uses complicated language in order to attract admiration and attention, especially in order to make the speaker/writer  seem important and learned.

Writing in this manner is considered as bombastic, pompous and pretentious. Hence avoidable. Invariably, repeated use of bombastic and pretentious language attracts ridicule and criticism. So please be cautious while using such  words.

If you still want to flaunt your vocabulary, please do remember simple thumb Rule: Never use more than one such word in whole of a Paragraph.

The above bombastic sentence in bold reminds the famous  dialogue 'Considering the Considerations' of Amitabh Bachchan in 1982 film Namak Halal. ๐Ÿค—

For you the future Managers, the correct style is : breviloquance. ( Speaking or writing in a concise or terse style; using brevity of speech.)
Another good word is eloquance which is fairly common. It is always better for a Manager to be an eloquant or a breviloquant leader than a grandiloquant buffoon.

You may tend to believe me as I do have 24 years' experience in Corporate world and sixteen years experience in CAT coaching. And I have come across speakers of all types in these 40 years:)

Coming back to the words grandiloquance, eloquance and breviloquance. How many words do you know which  end with loquance?

A few examples:
Grandiloquance, magniloquance, eloquance, somniloquance, breviloquance, multiloquance, longiloquance. Try to find more words from the root loqui!
